About Quincemere
A Sketching Archive Rooted in Singapore
Quincemere was established in 2024 by a small group of urban sketching enthusiasts based in Singapore. What began as a shared notebook of field observations and material tests has since expanded into a structured archive of practical references for anyone interested in drawing and painting the city's built environment.
The focus of the archive covers three main areas: material guides for watercolor paints, brushes, paper, and portable palettes; architectural references documenting heritage shophouses, colonial-era structures, and conservation district details; and sketch walk location notes compiled from regular outings across Singapore's neighbourhoods.
What the Archive Covers
Each entry in the Quincemere archive is oriented toward a specific, practical aspect of urban sketching in a tropical setting. Material reviews compare commercially available watercolor sets, water brushes, and sketch pads that can be purchased from art supply shops along Bras Basah Road and in suburban malls. Architectural references break down facade proportions, decorative tilework, ventilation grille patterns, and roofline profiles found in areas such as Chinatown, Kampong Glam, Little India, and the Joo Chiat-Katong stretch.
Location notes describe access points, available shade, seating options, and the types of subjects visible from each sketching spot. These notes draw from repeated visits across different times of day and weather conditions, with attention to how tropical light and humidity affect both the sketching experience and watercolor drying behaviour on site.
Contributors and Editorial Approach
Content on Quincemere is written by contributors who live in Singapore and regularly sketch across the island's heritage districts, parks, and waterfront areas. Each article is based on firsthand experience at the described locations, using the materials discussed. Entries are fact-checked against publicly available information from the Urban Redevelopment Authority, the National Heritage Board, and manufacturer specifications for art supplies referenced in material guides.
The archive is updated on a regular basis. Location notes are revised when access conditions change or new conservation work alters a building's appearance. Material entries are updated as new products become available locally or when pricing and availability shift at Singapore-based retailers. All updates are noted with the most recent revision date on each page.
